Wickford flats plan shelved

Wickford flats plan shelved
Echo, 10 June 2009

CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish Wickford's sorting office are being shelved.

The site in Lower Southend Road, had been earmarked for demolition, along with surrounding shops, to make way for riverside apartments under Wickford's masterplan.

The plans were strongly opposed by the Wickford Action Group, which claims too many flats have already been built in the town, and Royal Mail.

Basildon Council and Bradgate Developments, the building firm behind the scheme, announced they were withdrawing their application to the Secretary of State for a compulsory purchase order for the site.

This means Royal Mail will not be forced to sell the sorting office, so the flats will not be built for the forseeable future.

Comment from the Wickford Action Group.

This is thanks to the many people of Wickford who have signed our petition against the CPO, in the High Street and on our website.

Battle won, but the struggle against the masterplan continues
