Campaigner: 'I sent questions'
Echo 20 October 2008, Jon
Austin (It's
democracy week... cancel council meeting) A CAMPAIGNER has spoken of his disbelief at the full council meeting being axed after he put forward tricky questions.
David Harrison, is a member of Wickford Action Group, which is campaigning to limit the number of flats built in Wickford.
He had submitted questions to be asked of council leader Malcolm Buckley during a public question time at the start of the meeting.
His first question was: "Does the leader agree if a member of this council accepts repeated hospitality from companies or individuals who acquire contracts or planning consents from this council, he or she is in direct contravention of its constitution?"
Mr Harrison also wanted to ask about the Riverside Homes development being built in Wickford.
He said: "They get my questions and cancel the meeting.
"They can't have wanted the youth to see real democracy in action."
Mr Buckley said he had no knowledge of the questions Mr Harrison had intended to pose.
