Now developers have new lingo

FOR years we have learned to translate the way estate agents use the English language.
For example, compact means pokey, tiny rooms with space for only one chair, and in need of
redecoration turns into ceilings sagging and doors off their hinge.
Now we are seeing developers using their language to promote their money-grabbing schemes. A few that come to mind are:
Promotes regeneration - a block of dull flats, with two small shops;
iconic - a block of flats more than six storeys high with coloured bricks; and
prestigious -flats about eight storeys high with double-glazed windows.
The problem starts when planners encourage this by strongly suggesting to planning committees such schemes will be pleasing to the eye, meet local aspirations and meet all current Government guidelines. They then indicate it would cost the council dearly if they dare
to refuse to approve the scheme.
It is time local communities were able to have a greater impact and more influence on planning decisions which will affect their lives for years to come.
