  Shops and flats plan

RUNDOWN shops in Wickford could be transformed into 24 homes and two new shops if plans are approved.
Developer Childs Property wants to demolish numbers five and seven Woodlands Road and use the site and neighbouring land to build a four-storey block of flats, with parking and shops on the ground floor.
The firm's application to Basildon Council claims the shops have only been used irregularly in recent years.
It argues the proposal is in line with the £100million Wickford Town Centre masterplan.
However, a similar application it submitted for the same site in January was refused by the council as being at odds with long-term planning policies.
